Painted Ladies

Acquired By:
Jill & Allen C.
Burlingame, Ca

The above image is one of the best-known groups of "Painted Ladies" which is the row of Victorian houses at 710–720 Steiner Street, across from Alamo Square park, in San Francisco.

In order to create these unique, beautiful, and colorful houses, I used materials which are different in shapes and colors to articulate each house yet keeping their characteristic of architecture.  This piece requires detailed work, such as tiny aluminum ceramics used for awnings; and some of the smallest sizes of hematite and glass beads were used to make windows for buildings in the background.

Santorini, Greece

Upon arriving in Santorini, a breathtaking seaside town in Greece, I marveled at its spectacular landscapes, which were like nothing I had ever seen: blue domes and whitewashed houses and churches perched on volcanic cliffs, all set against the backdrop of the shimmering Aegean sea. The stunning beauty so overwhelmed me that when I returned home, I couldn’t wait to translate the essence of its unique colors and architecture into a mosaic while my mind was still so fresh and full of excitement! Based on a picture taken by my husband, this piece includes domed entrances and roofs, over seventy tiny windows, dozens of umbrellas, and many stairs and patios. All the stained glass was cut into tiny pieces in order to fit intricately together, and textured glass was used to capture the glint of sunlight from beautifully colored houses.

Dance Pause
When I began to ballroom dance, I realized that it’s not just a performance: it’s a beautiful coordination of movement between two people, in which you can achieve an organic whole, something transcendent.
In this piece, I wanted to explore the ideas of time and motion. In a single breathtaking, two ballroom dancers are swept up in their own rhythm, gliding seamlessly together as one. Time stops, but the movement continues. They dance on a flow of music made of mirrors and stacked glass, as the glittering light of a party ball made from fused glass reflects off the dance floor. The red dress still ripples with movement, even though the music has paused for one second—before the dancers continue their next move.

Coral Reef

The ocean is an eternal source of fascination to me. I have always wanted to explore the wealth of life that abounds deep below its placid surface. This mosaic is my imagining of the underwater world, teeming with an explosive diversity of color, textures and movement at every turn.
In order to mimic the intricate patterns and full spectrum of colors in this joyful underwater world, I used both hand-built forms for red & green anemone and sea plants, as well as natural materials, such as aragonite, azurite, malachite, amethyst, pyrite, quartz, and seashells.
